As we look at the roles in our orthodontic office, it holds true for any business. Each role requires different strengths and temperaments to best function there. I’m so thankful we are all created uniquely, but tend to be a combination of the four DISC Styles, so it is a helpful tool to use to place staff in their best role in an office.
So far we have covered the best DISC Style combinations for the Front Desk Receptionist, the New Patient Staff, and the Operatory Staff. If you want to review these blogposts, just click here.
As a quick refresher, in a nutshell, the 4 DISC Styles are:
- D-Style: Gets things done, is decisive and authoritative, prefers to be in charge
- I-Style: Is enthusiastic, outgoing, positive and persuasive, a “party looking for a place to happen”
- S-Style: Is steady, dependable, cooperative and patient, a great team player
- C-Style: Likes procedures, is systematic, precise and conscientious, focuses on the details
And remember that most of us are a combination of 2 or more Styles, but one is usually the strongest.
Now let’s look at the best DISC Style combination for the Business Office. There is no need for them to be the outgoing, “party-looking-for-a-place-to-happen” High I-Style; in fact, it is wiser if their I-Style is low. But their need for detail and for systems is very high, so the key is a High C-Style person. And often, they must work back in an office by themselves, so the preference to work quietly alone is a positive High C trait. It is also helpful to have some of the S-Style steadiness and patience with the process as well.
Sometimes the Business Staff also needs to deal with Insurance and Accounts overdue. In those instances, a fair amount of the D-Style is helpful. But it is important that the D-Style is not their strongest style, especially if the orthodontist or head of the business is a High D.
All this to say, that it is possible to put people in the areas of their strengths where they can best contribute in an office. This yields a fully functioning practice with very little turnover – a great way to run any business.
