As we talk about the goal to Minimize Turnover by developing a Fully Functioning Team, we need to talk briefly about the responsibility that is ours if we have staff working for us.
This struck home for us early in our practice years, when it was just my orthodontist husband and me running the practice. (FYI – my degree was in Vocal Music Education – a far cry from orthodontics). We had two dental friends in town who had been saving their patients for us. As soon as we graduated and set up our practice, they contacted all those patients and said, “Call them!” Suddenly we needed help fast! But we had no idea how to go about adding to our staff. I’ll share more in upcoming blogposts, but our first hire was an unmitigated disaster… and we felt a serious Responsibility to our staff.
This Weight of Responsibility includes these goals:
- To honor how each of our fellow workers are designed by utilizing them according to their gifts and strengths
- To understand what roles and tasks each staff member should do to transform our office from constant turnover to a Fully Functioning Team.
- Is all based on my strong foundational belief that we were each created very specifically and very purposefully.
- To give them a place to work where they are respected for their unique design and allowed to use their gifts in their workplace.
Next week, we will start a series of blogposts on using the DISC System in the Hiring Process we developed that yielded outstanding results and contributed much to the result of a Fully Functioning Team. But it is worth taking some time to think through the responsibility we have if we are to reach our goals.
