Years ago, one of our employees – an outgoing, high energy, vivacious, super people-person type, came to me one day with these words, “If I have to Go Back There again, I’m going to lose my mind!!”
“Go Back There” referred to the fact that she was assigned Lab Duty – so she sat in the far back depths of the office, alone in a cubicle, with a model of someone’s teeth in one hand and a sharp dental instrument in the other, picking bubbles off the model… model after model, hour after hour. Of course she was about to lose her mind! It wasn’t the right fit!!
How about you? Was there ever a point in your life when that was exactly how you felt about the job you were in? Perhaps you feel that way now? And just as important – think about your office staff, or others you work with… are there individuals who are saying those same frustrated words because of the job they are placed in?
For our beleaguered employee, thankfully, we also needed help at the front desk – a constant whirlwind of people and scheduling and phones ringing and questions needing to be answered – the perfect fit for her. Needless to say, she was fabulous in that role!
We did this for each job in our office – figured out what the role required in strengths, gifts, energy, motivation; then, using the DISC System, we only hired the person who best fit that role. The end result was a fully functioning team with people who loved to come to work – because we had put them in a role that perfectly fit them.
For nearly 25 years, we practiced this DISC System to put the ideal person in the ideal place. During that time, we also learned some important general guidelines for placing people in their best roles:
- D-Style: It is very important to have only ONE High D in the entire office. Otherwise, they will challenge each other, compete with each other and constantly be knocking heads over who is going to be in charge.
- I-Style: Likewise, it is important to always have ONE High I in the Operatory working on patients. Even though they might not be as focused or detailed in their work, they add that Fun Factor and make everyone’s day much brighter and easier. They are also fabulous in their ability to interact with patients and make them feel more comfortable – a priceless quality in any office!
- S-Style: These are our patient and persistent folks. We always fill the Operatory with these reliable people, usually warm and pleasant, who can faithfully persevere through long hectic days.
- C-Style: These are the systems and detail staff. Often they prefer working alone where they can focus on the details of their job. These are the best lab people, or if they are good with numbers, the Business Office staff.
We also learned the flip side: what DISC Styles each role in the office required. As we perfected these descriptions, we could fine-tune which staff member we placed in which role. Then we also knew exactly who we needed to hire for each empty role. It is an amazing system with remarkable results that leads to a Fully Functioning Team of people who are excited to come to work!
