Back on June 22, 2021, I shared how the C-Style prefers to communicate in the blogpost, “Can We Talk About the Numbers and Details, Please?!”
There is another important side to this communication coin – Listening Skills.
Recently, Extended DISC of North America did a valuable webinar on the Listening Skills of each DISC Style. As I wait to get permission to share more from Different Children, Different Needs on how adults and children interact, these listening approaches would be beneficial to focus on for the next few weeks.
But instead of always starting with the D-Style, I thought I’d focus on the C’s this week.
Remember – the C-Style person:
- Is detail oriented
- Likes systems and procedures
- Is conscientious
- Tends to be precise
It would logically follow, then, that the strengths of their Listening Style would include:
- Focusing on the facts and details being shared
- Keeping an objective attitude
- Paying attention to the logic involved
- Discerning accuracy
One of my husband’s favorite comments when he is listening to me starts with the word, “Actually…” as he corrects the accuracy of something I’ve said. So I’ve learned, especially when we are going to be with a group of people, to request he keep the “Actually…” statements for home only. Then please only use them for those corrections that are important.
In keeping with this tendency, items to improve a C-Style’s Listening Skills might include:
- Trying to focus only on essential details and not let the non-essential ones distract them from the conversation
- Being aware of the feelings of the person who is talking as well as the facts of what they are saying
- Seeking to think in the abstract as well as the concrete
As you think about the C-Style folks you interact with, I hope these insights will help improve those talking/listening times.
QUESTION: Have you ever considered how someone’s DISC Style might influence their listening? Can you think of ways to apply this insight to your own listening skills or to the C-Style people in your life? I’d love to hear your thoughts and observations. Please share in the comment section below.
