A C-Style Person and Their Listening Skills

One of my High C-Style husband’s favorite comments when he is listening to me starts with “Actually…” as he corrects the accuracy of something I’ve said. So I’ve learned, especially when we are going to be in a group of people, to request he keep the “Actually…” statements for home only. Then please only use them for those corrections that are important.

[Please note that most people are a combination of two or three styles, but one style is usually the strongest.]

Remember – the C-Style person:

  • Is detail oriented
  • Likes systems and procedures
  • Is conscientious
  • Tends to be precise

It would logically follow, then, that the strengths of their listening style would include:

  • Focusing on the facts and details being shared
  • Keeping an objective attitude
  • Paying attention to the logic involved
  • Discerning accuracy

In keeping with this tendency, items to improve a C-Style’s listening skills might include:

  • Trying to focus only on essential details and not let the non-essential ones distract them from the conversation
  • Being aware of the feelings of the person who is talking as well as the facts of what they are saying
  • Seeking to think in the abstract as well as the concrete

[My special thanks to Extended DISC for their Listening Webinar. They were shockingly accurate! So I thank them for sharing these important insights.]

As you think about the C-Style folks you interact with, I hope these insights will help improve those talking/listening times.

QUESTION: If you have some C-Style in you, do you find your focus on details and accuracy makes it harder to listen without correcting others? I’d love to hear your thoughts and observations. Please share in the comment section below.
