With Laughter – How a High I-Style Person Wants Others to Communicate with Them

As we go through this life of ours, I hope it is important to you to communicate well with others – to hear their thoughts and ideas and share yours as well. Then to understand each other.

These blogposts on how each DISC Style prefers to communicate are meant to be a key to those goals.

Last week, we discussed how a task-focused, high energy, must-be-in-charge, High D-Style person prefers that others communicate with them. This week, as we focus on the people-focused, fun-loving, persuasive High I-Style person, you can imagine that their communication preferences would be vastly different.

First, as a reminder, the High I-Style person tends to:

  • Be fun-loving, a “party looking for a place to happen”
  • Focus on people more than on tasks
  • Have a “faster speed motor”
  • Be more outgoing – a friendly extrovert
  • Be very persuasive
  • Have a positive attitude – usually sees the jar half full
  • Have lots of enthusiasm

Not surprisingly then, they appreciate this kind of communication from others:

  • Friendly comments
  • No harshness
  • Focus on the benefit to people
  • Prefers to discuss ideas
  • Include lots of laughter when appropriate

All of these points will make it easier for the High I-Style person to listen well and stay focused on what others are trying to say to them.

As a High I-Style myself, I have learned that if I need to have a conversation that will involve lots of facts, numbers or details – it will require extra effort to listen well. I also know that after a certain amount of time, my brain will say “Uncle”, my eyes will glaze over and there will be no point in continuing the conversation. But I can sit around and discuss ideas, especially how they will benefit people, for hours. If you throw in a few jokes or funny stories, I am a captive audience!
