How can IKEA Furniture show me my Highest DISC Style?

Last week, I promised a helpful way to discern your highest strengths – by discussing how each Style prefers to put together IKEA furniture. I have found this gives people practical examples they can quickly identify with to gain more insight into how they are designed.

So are you an IKEA fan? My children who live in New York City are absolutely addicted! They have found an abundance of space-saving items!

The IKEA process is a perfect way to look at each of 4 Basic DISC Styles. HOW you prefer to put IKEA furniture together can reveal your strongest Styles.

I’ve had the “distinguished” privilege of putting together lots of IKEA furniture – sometimes by myself and sometimes with others – often with all levels of offers from others to “help”. I’ve noticed that people approach this task in vastly different ways. The insight you can get from today’s blogpost can explain a lot. Special thanks to Extended DISC for their teaching on the IKEA example as well.

When our 4 DISC Styles approach the task of putting furniture together:

  • The High D-Style – prefers not to stop or waste time reading the instructions but just get after the job at hand; to quote a D-Style in our family, “Instructions are for wimps!”
  • The High I-Style – will throw a party to accomplish the task and invite friends over, complete with plenty of snacks; anything to add FUN to the process
  • The High S-Style – will prefer to do the process S-L-O-W-L-Y, perhaps involving a helper or two, and will patiently work through it step-by-step
  • The High C-Style – will read ALL the instructions carefully, then group the pieces into different containers, have them lined up and organized, making sure they have everything required, and will insist on QUIET.

So take a minute and look these descriptions over again. Do you identify with any of these? Are you a combination of two or three different Styles? Remember, only 4% of the population has one highest Style. Most people are a combination of two or three Styles in varying strengths.

The goal is to start figuring out which Style or Styles are your strongest. If you would like to know for sure, I recommend taking the Extended DISC Individual Assessment. It is a quick and easy online tool. I also offer a 1:1 Personal Review of your Assessment if you desire. Click here for more information on the Individual Assessment alone. Click here for the Assessment plus the 1:1 time with me to review it.

Next week, we will discuss where each Style best fits in an orthodontic (or dental) office. This is a critical key to Minimizing Turnover in an office. I’ll also share my chart on how to make progress on applying this understanding that many practitioners have found extremely helpful.

QUESTION: Are you starting to get a clear idea of which Style or Styles are your strongest?  I’d love to hear your thoughts and observations. Please share in the comment section below.
