In most stressful situations, if the people involved are to succeed and survive, there is usually a High S-Style person involved. For instance, in our orthodontic practice, we would often see 80 – 100 patients in a day. YES – a DAY! The schedule was packed, there were patients and emergencies to care for, the phone was ringing constantly. It was easy to become overwhelmed, frazzled and frustrated. But this was when it became invaluable to have our S-Style staff in place.
To review: the S-Style’s Basic Descriptors are:
- Dependable
- Persistent
- Cooperative
- Steady
We always wanted to fill our Operatory in our orthodontic office with S-Style people (along with one High I for the Fun Factor). These High S’s would be calm and steady, but persistent throughout our hectic scheduled days. They were also the ultimate Team Players, even under stress.
So what Motivates the S-Style person:
- Stability – knowing they can trust the situation, the people, the circumstance
- Consensus – since they are such strong Team Players, it is important to have the Team in agreement and going the same direction
- Predictability – no Blind-Siding please; they like to know there is a reason for changes and given time to think through those changes or decisions
- Consistent pace – even if it is crazy hectic, they will find a good steady rhythm and keep at it
And what De-Motivates that S-Style:
- Sudden changes – these people usually need a warning, then a reason, then time to think through the changes and the options involved; it is important to give them this process
- Conflict – knocking heads is definitely not their favorite way to operate, but cooperation and working through differences goes a long way to encourage them
- Insincerity – these folks tend to be very honest and straight-forward and value those qualities in others
- Extra pressure – especially if they don’t know it is coming or don’t see the reason for it
Do you have these High S-Style people in your family or your workplace? I want to encourage you to find ways to use these pointers to give them that extra motivation boost.
