So far we’ve looked at how the task-focused High D person and the people-focused High I person prefer that others communicate with them. If you want to catch up on these, just click here.
This week, let’s talk about the patient High S-Style person. As I write this, please know I am bursting out in laughter – and I’ll explain why at the end of this blogpost.
First, as a reminder, here are the High S-Style’s tendencies:
- Dependable
- Steady
- Persistent
- Extremely patient
- Cooperative – a great Team Player
- Focuses on people
- Often has a slower “motor” – walks slower, talks slower, thinks slower
Not surprisingly then, they appreciate communication from others that:
- Gives them time to think
- Involves a calm approach
- Is consistent
- Shows benefits of change
All of these points will make it easier for the High S-Style person to listen well and stay engaged with what others are trying to say to them.
The S-Style is my other highest in rank. As I’ve mentioned, we are in the throes of building a new house 560 miles from where we currently live. We are going back and forth, trying to stay a step ahead in the decision-making process so we don’t slow our builders down.
But there is such an enormous difference in communication styles with my Take-Action-NOW High D-Style husband, that it has become even more important to understand those differences and make adjustments. As I read over the descriptions of what each of us needs and prefers in communicating, it does make me laugh out loud. Understanding and perseverance are the keys.
QUESTION: Does the importance of knowing how best to communicate with each Style resonate with you? I’d love to hear your thoughts and observations. Please share in the comment section below.
