How Does a People-Focused High S-Style Person Prefer to Communicate?

The High S-Style is usually a person you can sit and talk with for hours – comfortable, friendly, usually a great listener, and seems to know the right questions to ask to draw out a good conversation.

The S-Style is one of my highest-ranking styles. One of my favorite things to do when I’m riding in a taxi (or Lyft or Uber) is to ask a few simple questions of my driver and see if they will go on to tell me their life story. I’ve heard some amazing stories and met some fascinating people from all over the world this way!

In our orthodontic practice, we tried to make sure our Operatory had several of these S-Style people working in it. Even in the midst of hectic schedules, they could keep an even keel, be patient and calm, and still carry on a pleasant conversation with the patients.

As a review, the High S-Style’s tendencies:

  • Dependable
  • Steady
  • Persistent
  • Extremely patient
  • Cooperative – a great Team Player
  • Focuses on people
  • Often has a slower “motor” – walks slower, talks slower, thinks slower

Knowing these natural tendencies, it follows that people with a High S-Style prefer to communicate in a way that is:

  • Friendly – warm, easy to talk with
  • Casual – low-key and comfortable
  • Sympathetic – empathy is one of their strong suits
  • Harmonious – always seeking to be a team player
  • Focused on People – their needs and thoughts

Indeed – putting several High S-Style folks in your Operatory can give you an office full of pleasant conversations even in the midst of schedule pressure.

Do you have any High S’s on your staff, in your home, extended family, workplace or neighborhood? Have you noticed that they prefer any of these natural communication tendencies?

Remember that a High S’s main goal is to focus on people. So their communication will reflect this goal. This week, let’s observe the High S’s as they communicate in their preferred way.
