Last week, we looked at how a C-Style tends to listen. In keeping with “working backwards” through the DISC Styles, this week we’ll review the S-Style’s listening tendencies. Always, as this picture says, it is a good goal to “Speak Less, Listen More”. But for a high S-Style, it is their deep conviction.
Because the S-Style is my highest, I was interested to see how much I agreed with the points Extended DISC made in their Listening Webinar. They were shockingly accurate! So I thank them for sharing these important insights.
Remember – the S-Style person is:
- Dependable
- Persistent
- Steady
- Cooperative
- A great team player
It would logically follow, then, that the strengths of their listening style would include:
- Patient and “long listeners”
- Attentive and fully present with the person who is talking
- Typically won’t interrupt but will wait to speak, sometimes not responding at all
In keeping with this tendency, items to improve an S-Style’s listening skills might include:
- Be careful not to focus on the negatives or what could possibly go wrong
- Remember to voice an opinion
- Be sure to provide feedback
- Be brave and speak honestly
QUESTION: If you have some S-Style in you, do you find it challenging sometimes to speak up and express your thoughts and opinions? Would you rather listen? I’d love to hear your thoughts and observations. Please share in the comment section below.
